This new edition is declined in two versions:

• Open NFC 4.3.3 for Android Gingerbread 2.3.7
• Open NFC 4.3.3 for Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.1

This new Android edition has the following changes:

• Open NFC start-up sequence no more dependent on the NFC ON/OFF switch, to better handle NFC controller state.
• New porting file layout to ease implementation & compilation of applications dependent on Open NFC
• (ICS only) Beam implementation
• (ICS only) SNEP implementation

Both editions are only available as source code at the moment. The Git repositories are:

The following are the main changes:

Core Edition:

• Improved memory management
• Removed deprecated and unused code
• Improved testing system
• New (optional) mechanism to protect against some deadlock situations
• Some types are renamed: tchar to char16_t, sint*_t to int*_t, and bool to bool_t. You may have to refactor your client applications accordingly.
• Improved P2P interoperability and stability.

NFC HAL for MicroRead:

• Changes in firmware version string format.
• Fixes related to the Security Stack.
• This version comes with Loader 7.11a and Firmware 7.15a. Important: These loaders and firmware can only be used together, they are not backward compatible with older firmwares and loaders. As usual, we recommend that you flash your MicroRead or SecuRead chip with this version of loader and firmware (then your customized parameters) before using this version of the stack.

Please note that this release does not include the Android edition.

The main changes are:

• Removed two Open NFC applications that were buggy. You have to go to Settings -> Wireless & Settings -> NFC to enable the feature.
• Default to Simulator / 10.0.2.2 when NFC parameters are not set.
• Fixed permission on the /dev/nfcc device.
• Cleanup some un-used files.

Please note that the Open NFC version used in this new image is exactly the same as previously.

The following are the main changes:

• The Core, SDK and Linux Edition now include the Java wrapper and the API to use Open NFC in this environment.
• The stack is now fully compliant with the SIM Alliance API release 1.2. The Security Stack feature has evolved accordingly.
• The stack is now fully 64-bit compliant in all editions.
• The NFC HAL for MicroRead includes new Loader (7-OR-0A) and Firmware (7.14A) versions.
• The Linux Edition now includes an example i2c native driver for the MicroRead.
• The pre-built binaries for Win32 now include the traces activated by default.
• Android Edition now builds against Android 2.3.5. Older releases are no longer supported.

A number of cleanups have been performed in the contents of the different Editions; new components have been added while other components have been removed; we encourage you to browse inside the different archives even if you are already familiar with the previous releases to get an overview of all the changes. As usual, the Release Notes of each archive should be a good starting point.

Our new Add-On now contains only an AVD image for use with the official Android Emulator. This AVD image includes the Open NFC software stack that connects to the Connection Center application. This enables all application developers to use NFC features and test with the Android official Emulator, quite simply.

Without revealing all the exciting new features of this upcoming revision, we can disclose the prototype of two new functions that will be added in this release.

WReaderGetIdentifier

This function will return the Unique Identifier of any tag, independently from the technology — be it the PUPI, the UID, …

WReaderExchangeData

This function will allow exchanging raw data with cards of any technology: it replaces dedicated functions such as W14Part4ExchangeData, WFeliCaExchangeData, W15ExchangeData, … which become deprecated.

These new functions simplify and improve the usability of the stack, we hope you will enjoy this change!

This new release brings the support of Open NFC for Android 2.3.4. The support of the previous Android version (2.3.3) is discontinued.

The main features of this new release are:

Warning: Because of the new features listed above,  the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) interface had to be changed. The new Open NFC cannot be used with older lower-layer implementations. It means in particular that:

1. If you are using a MicroRead NFC controler, Open NFC 4.3 requires a firmware version of at least 7.13, and loader at least 7.09. The stack cannot be used with an older firmware (it will give a NO FIRMWARE error state when attempted). Note that the reverse is also not possible (newer firmware with older stack).
2. If you are using the NFC Simulator tool provided in the Core Edition, you must use the simulator provided with your version of Open NFC, since the interface version also has changed in the simulator.
